Marleen Martens’ PhD thesis has been passed by her panel of four examiners. Congratulations Marleen!
Marleen is registered at the Free University of Amsterdam, with Prof Roymans and Dr Willis (University of Kent) her supervisors for the study.
Marleen’s thesis examined the archaeological finds, site formation processes and especially the structured intentional way finds and other archaeological remains were lain down by the people of the Roman Small Town at Tienen in eastern Belgium. In particular her study has compared the archaeological remains from domestic, cemetery and ritual/ceremonial contexts and critically assessed their composition and the categories we work with in archaeology. Marleen has her ‘public defence’ in November, this being the formal ceremonial procedure when she receives her doctorate.
