To celebrate the launch of its new BSc in Human Geography in autumn 2019, the School of Anthropology and Conservation is offering five scholarships of £2,000 for students starting the degree in September 2020.

Begun in September 2019, the Human Geography BSc is delivered by the academic community across the School. Offered as a three- or four-year (with one-year work placement) degree, it is a fusion of major geographic themes such as social and cultural geography, economics and development studies, and environmental and landscape planning. It will also bring in expertise from across the University including Law, Sociology, Anthropology and Biodiversity Conservation.

Supported by the Royal Geographical Society, the programme is designed to give students a deep understanding of why the world is changing so quickly, and how these changes affect the environment, culture and economies at local, national and global scales.

Professor Tracy Kivell, Head of School, said, “We are delighted to announce these scholarships for what is an exciting course. They will be awarded to applicants with an excellent academic profile and a motivated focus on pursuing a career which provides solutions to the world’s problems.”

Reader in Tourism Management, Dr Mark Hampton, who will lead the programme, said, “There is a wealth of geography expertise at Kent. Our BSc degree in Human Geography draws on this expertise, enabling us to run an exciting new programme which builds on the traditional foundations of geography and then takes it to a new level to help analyse and tackle complex contemporary issues.”

These one-year Human Geography Sustainability Scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis. Applicants will need to write a 500 word essay on the following topic:

“Given the climate and environmental crisis – what can Human Geographers do to help drive sustainable development?”

The deadline is 17:00 on 31st May 2020.

Details of how to apply are available here.

Full details of the programme can be found via the online prospectus or via sacadmissions@kent.ac.uk.
