Dr Sarah Johns recognised as Senior Fellow of Higher Education Academy

Dr Sarah Johns has been recognised as a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).

The award of a Senior Fellowship reflects her considerable leadership experience, teaching and programme development, both in her previous role as Faculty Sub-Dean for Learning and Teaching and as a valued academic within SAC as an evolutionary anthropologist. The award particularly recognises Dr Johns’ commitment to teaching innovation and quality, especially in the continued development and moderation of the BSc programmes in Anthropology and Biological Anthropology, and her dedication as programme convenor for the MSc in Evolution and Human Behaviour.

The Higher Education Academy (HEA) is an independent organisation, with a global network of 100,000 HEA Fellows. The HEA champions teaching excellence in higher education to improve student outcomes. HEA Senior Fellows must demonstrate a thorough understanding of effective approaches to teaching and learning support as a key contribution to high quality student learning. They must also demonstrate impact and influence through their leadership, management and mentoring.

Dr Johns is committed to understanding human reproductive timing and evolved sexual behaviour. Her work has policy implications, specifically for governmental teenage pregnancy strategy, and she has conducted research exploring female genital colouration and male mating preferences, and relationships between smoking, risk behaviour and mating success. She believes that research that links both function and mechanism is the future direction for evolutionary studies of human behaviour and continues to push the boundaries of the field in this direction.
