Anthropology alumna’s student film project selected for competition at Los Angeles CineFest

Catriona Blackburn, who graduated in July 2017 with a BSc in Anthropology, has been invited to screen her film Cooking Ghosts at the 2018 edition of the Los Angeles CineFest. The meditative documentary portrait comprises her undergraduate film project for visual anthropology and has been selected for a semi-finalist position at the event. The Los Angeles CineFest is an online and live festival that holds a monthly red carpet event and award ceremony organised by the award-winning filmmaker Mark Mos.

At the annual screening of student projects in the school, Cooking Ghosts was the runner-up of the Hugh Brody prize, named after the renowned anthropologist, filmmaker and writer who recently received an honorary degree at November’s graduation ceremony. Hugh described Catriona’s film as a “wonderful exploration of family, memory and image.”

Catriona received a first-class honours degree from the University of Kent while the single parent of a young child and is now striving for a career as an academic filmmaker and visual anthropologist.
