Financial Times Article on Studying Liberal Arts

Columnist Gillian Tett has recently written about the substantial benefits of studying a Liberal Arts degree in her Financial Times column.  As one of the few UK institutions to offer a BA (Hons) in Liberal Arts we are very interested in her insightful perspective.

Gillian Tett described Liberal Arts programmes as having a “smorgasbord” approach which allows students to engage with a range of subjects and topics rather than restricting their interests to one or two subject areas.

Liberal Arts is particularly prevalent in America, however, its popularity is under threat as state governors consider withdrawing funding in favour of vocational or technology focussed courses. Gillian Tett expresses concern about this approach and draws attention to the long-term gains of having graduates whose education is broader and more rounded.

The BA (Hons) Liberal Arts programme at Kent is already attracting the kind of students Gillian Tett describes; creative, broad-minded and intellectually curious. Our programme allows students to develop a wide range of perspectives including; political, cultural, historical, scientific, mathematical and economic.
