Channel 4’s ‘The Island’ is ‘inherently sexist’

Female survival experts have criticised Channel 4’s show The Island for only featuring male contestants. This latest Bear Grylls’ series features 12 male ‘survivors’ stranded on a desert island. SAC PhD Ethnobotony student and bushcraft instructor, Lisa Fenton was quoted in The Times (Weds, 23 April):

“It’s fantastical and ridiculous. Women are every bit as cut out for this stuff as men. It is sexism and it’s deeply rooted.”

A spokesman for Channel 4 said: “The series sets out to examine modern masculinity and how traditional skills and ideas of manhood have changed over generations.”
