The UK government is committed to establishing a Marine Protected Area network and the Balanced Seas project, based in DICE, University of Kent has been established to support sea users and interest groups for inshore and offshore UK waters of the Eastern Channel and adjacent areas to achieve this. The project extends from just north of the Suffolk/Essex border to the Hampshire/Dorset border in the south-west and includes the Thames Estuary and the Solent. The methodology combines stakeholder-based deliberations with state of the art conservation planning tools such as ‘Maxent’ to identify a coherent Marine Protected Areas system for the region and represents an important step towards the sustainable use of marine biodiversity in the UK.
