University of Kent Contributes to Parliamentary Inquiry on Boys’ Attainment

The University of Kent has successfully submitted evidence to the UK Parliament’s Education Committee as part of its inquiry into boys’ attainment and engagement in education. This inquiry was launched to address the persistent underperformance of boys compared to girls across various educational stages and highlights the urgent need for tailored strategies to close this gender gap.

Within this evidence, the University details the design, implementation and findings of it’s Championing Boys outreach programme. The findings advocate for higher education institutions to recognise  intersectional disadvantage, particularly when considering the intersectionality between gender and socio-economic status. The university suggests that this should be addressed within the Office for Students’ Equality of Opportunity Risk Register. This report calls for gender-informed widening participation strategies that resonate with the lived experiences of boys.
