The ‘Well Played’ games club is an innovative new initiative from the University of Kent aimed at supporting literacy and oracy confidence in KS3 students.
This pilot project has seen groups of year 7 and 8 students at Brompton Academy play tabletop games for an hour a week, over 12 weeks. These games have been selected for their potential to enhance literacy and oracy through the need to use expressive language, storytelling, persuasion and narrative concepts during gameplay.
The students were supported and guided throughout by student ambassadors to encourage full participation in the games. Feedback from the students who participated has been overwhelmingly positive, with participants saying they feel they can ‘argue better, listen better’ ‘debate better and speak more confidently to a small group’, and teachers saying ‘I have seen [their] confidence grow this term in English lessons’.
Please find attached a review of the initiative from one of the participants, Elliott.
