New Recruitment and Selection Training

To support the launch of the new resourcing system Stonefish, L&OD have worked with the Resourcing Team to create new recruitment and selection training.

Effective recruitment, which helps us appoint the right people into the right roles has always been crucial for the organisation, even more so now at a time when we need to be both agile and resilient to the economic and sector challenges being faced. Getting our recruitment right; bringing in the skills and talent we need to effectively remain competitive with our peer group and providing the level of education and student experience required to attract students has never been been more important. With this in mind our Resourcing Policy launched in December 2018, outlines the need for one person on each selection panel to be recruitment and selection trained.

After taking some time to review the previous training and considering the importance of the process, we have developed a new approach to supporting our staff to undertake the recruitment process. This new approach involves using a 2 stage process for the training. In order to be classified as fully recruitment and selection trained, for the purposes of the policy requirement, those taking part in the process will required to undertake both stages of the new training. These stages comprise of;

  • Part One – An online e-learning module
  • Part Two – a practical classroom workshop

Part One

The initial online module will be provided through our new Staff Training Moodle platform and will be open to all staff, regardless of the type of involvement in the recruitment process. The module can be undertaken at a staff members own pace, logging in and out saving completed aspects to return to the rest at a later date and can be completed anywhere with access to the internet. For details of how to logon to the training please visit our L&OD web page by clicking this link.

Part Two

Dependent on the type of involvement you are likely to have in the recruitment process, you can chose between two different workshops to attend.

Option one: If you will be acting as a Chair of Panel or a Hiring Manager, you will attend a full-day workshop which will, in the morning, cover in further detail the planning process and elements required to get a recruitment campaign underway and in the afternoon look at some of the more practical skills of assessment, shortlisting, interviewing and decision making.

Option two: If you are only going to be taking part as a panel member undertaking assessment of applications, shortlisting, selection activities and decision-making you are only required to attend the half day practical selection element.

Support for the online Moodle training

If you are new to using online learning methods, would like some assistance to log in and navigate the module or simply need access to a PC to undertake the training we will be providing a number of drop-in sessions over the next few weeks. Please pop along between the times outlined and I will be available to assist you and answer any queries you may have.

Drop-in session dates, times and location:

  • Tuesday 19 March 13:00 – 16:00 IT Training Room SE20
  • Friday 22 March 09:30 – 12:30 IT Training Room SE20
  • Monday 25 March 13:00 – 16:00 IT training Room SE20

I have already undertaken the old style recruitment and selection training – do I need to do this new training?

As we embed this new training, for an interim period those of you who have undertaken the old style training in the last two years will be viewed as trained, however we are encouraging everyone to undertake the new training as soon as possible and will phase out the data related to those who have previously been marked as trained, so yes, you will need to undertake the training at some stage very soon. If you are a Hiring Manager or are likely to be involved in recruitment on a regular basis we would recommend you enrol as soon as possible. In due course we will also introduce a refresher training activity to ensure everyone stays up to date with best practice and the University policies and procedures.
