National Apprenticeship Week: Meet our mentors!

James is the Director of Operations for the new Division of Natural Sciences, and we asked him to tell us a bit about what it is like to support an apprentice.

Who you are supporting that is undertaking an Apprenticeship, and what are they doing?

I supported Kalli Glezakou directly and Tim Hewitt within the SSPSSR Department. Kalli is doing a management apprenticeship and Tim a digital marketing apprenticeship.

How did you find out about the Apprenticeship, and what were your initial thoughts?

It was as a result of a conversation with Loretta Izod and then as part of a way to think differently about how we recruited to the post that Tim has. I was very keen to access some of the funding and to get people in who were striving towards a different kind of goal and could bring us new skills.

What are the benefits for the team of having staff undertake apprenticeships?

Both candidates are able to use information, skills and approaches that they have learned in their day to day work. The team has benefited by changing some of the ways in which social media has been used by the School.

How it is helping you?

It has helped me to a) understand the apprenticeship opportunity b) fill a vacancy that we may not have been able to have again under the recent review and c) get good staff who are trained for the role they are undertaking.

What are some of the positives and challenges?

There are many positives. The main one is a focus on a key area of the business such as digital marketing. It helps us to re-evaluate and reinvent ourselves.

There have been a few teething problems with providers and this has caused some short delays. This has been marshalled carefully by Loretta and the team in SSPSSR.
