Last week, Kelly and James visited the Great North Museum: Hancock in Newcastle to deliver an outreach activity as part of the museum’s Archaeology Day. Kelly and James discussed the project with the public and brought along various replicas of late roman objects including pots, spoons, coins and a shoe!
There was also a range of family friendly activities including a coin-identification activity, hoard building activity and younger visitors were encouraged to have a go at writing a very short story about a late Roman hoard based on what they learnt. Here are a couple of the stories they came up with:
In my treasure pot I would put a wedding ring and coins made out of gold, rings with gems and a spoon for eating soup and for drinking. I think I would be a rich Roman if I had all of that.

Did you know that Romans used to bury their secret treasure? If I was a Roman, I would be very lucky and bury items like money (coins), rings and my rare stuff. I wouldn’t be happy if someone else found it or had stolen it.’
