Professor David Herd’s recent essay ‘The View from Dover’ has been published by the Los Angeles Review of Books. The essay discusses the ‘Citadel’ at Dover, once a Napoleonic Fort and now an Immigration Removal Centre. Described as a ‘non-place’ the building “occupies an iconic location, looking out over the English Channel from Dover’s Western Heights. Secretly it provides one of the best views in Britain, situated as it is just outside.” The essay is available to read on the LARB website.
Professor Herd is participating in the upcoming series Refugee Tales. Primarily a walk in solidarity with refugees and detainees, it also includes performances of original work by David Herd, Dragan Todorovic, Abdulrazak Gurnah and Patience Agbabi. The collaborative series of events seeks to depict the various stages of the migrant experience. Refugee Tales will take place from 13-21 June 2015 at various venues across Kent and Sussex.
