Making Black Lives Matter Event

9 October, 6 pm, Grimond LT3: English at Kent Professor Emeritus Lyn Innes Book Launch

Interested in learning more about black lives in the Victorian period? All are welcome to join the Centre for the Global Study of Empire on Thursday 9 October for a book launch. At 6pm in Grimond Lecture Theatre 3, English at Kent Professor Emeritus Lyn Innes will speak about her new book, Fugitive Families: Making Black Lives Matter in Victorian Britain (Lutterworth, 2025). The book is an insightful investigation of seven extraordinary lives, providing a fascinating portrait of the writers, speakers and activists who left the US under the Fugitive Slave Act and the British society they discovered. The launch is led by Kent’s postcolonial expert Dr Maria Ridda, so make sure to join English at Kent lecturers and students to learn about black lives during Black History Month at Kent.
