Betsy Porritt and Winsome Monica Minott, PhD candidates in Poetry: Text, Practice as Research, have launched a new reading series on ‘Poetry From Around the World’
The reading group will feature an established write who will share their work alongside four students from the Kent community. The organisers intend to hold 2 events each term. As of October, the series will combine workshops and seminar style poetry sessions with readings from invited speakers. This new series will be a space for students to discuss ideas, ways of reading and forms of writing among established poets and fellow students and Kent staff.
The first session, taking place on Thursday 11 June 2020, 3pm-5pm, will feature American professor and poet Major Jackson, who is the author of five collections of poetry: The Absurd Man (2020), Roll Deep ( 2015), Holding Company ( 2010), Hoops (2006), which was selected as finalist for an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literature-Poetry, and Leaving Saturn (2002), which won the Cave Canem Poetry Prize for a first book of poems. Major Jackson has also been awarded a Pushcart Prize, a Whiting Writers’ Award, and has been honoured by the Pew Fellowship in the Arts and the Witter Bynner Foundation in conjunction with the Library of Congress.
All are very welcome to attend. If you are interested in sharing your work in a student reader slot, please email either Winsome Monica at wm238@kent.ac.uk or Betsy at b.j.porritt@kent.ac.uk.
