Army of Lovers – New Libretto by David Flusfeder

Written by noted composer Mark Springer, with the libretto is by prize-winning novelist David Flusfeder, and with Charlotte Horton, acclaimed wine-maker and castle restorer as the artistic director, Army of Lovers is the first of a series of concerts to be held in the courtyard of Castello di Potentino.

Mark Springer and Charlotte Horton have been working together for five years at Castello di Potentino on a series of concerts called ‘Concerti nel Cortile’ – Concerts in the Castle Courtyard.

The projects have been developing in scale and scope year-on-year. For this season it was decided to put on a new opera for three voices and piano based on Plutarch’s tale of the Sacred Band of Thebes, called Army of Lovers.

The piece is to be performed in the castle’s fortified courtyard with an interactive visual projection on its ancient facades. Award-winning director Eugene Jarecki and artist Georgina Hill will create the moving image.

The cast consists of three internationally renowned singers; Derek Lee Ragin (Counter Tenor), Alexander Robin Baker (Bass Baritone), and Thomas Segen (Tenor).

Army of Lovers – A Mark Springer Opera takes place at the Castello di Potentino in Tuscany between the 9th and 12th August 2018.
