Dr Sara Lyons (Lecturer in Victorian Literature) appeared on the popular Radio 4 programme ‘In Our Time’ on Thursday 18 June. The programme, which is presented by Melvyn Bragg, included a distinguished panel of guests including Dinah Birch (Professor of English Literature and Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research at the University of Liverpool) and Karen O’Brien (Vice Principal and Professor of English Literature at King’s College London). The panel discussed Charlotte Brontë’s enduringly popular novel Jane Eyre published in 1847.
Sara discussed, amongst other things, the importance for Brontë that Jane Eyre was presented as a ‘plain’ heroine and ways in which the novel can be read as a Gothic nightmare or fairy-tale.
