Welcome week is always the busiest week in the student calendar but the School of English put on even more activities this year, which made for a packed and exciting week. Students met members of the academic and administrative team at the welcome talk, were personally welcomed by Dr Emma Bainbridge (the school Student Support Officer) and had the opportunity to get to know their fellow students at the School of English pub quiz.
The highlight of the week for many of our students, however, was a talk by writer Joe Dunthorne. Joe, who studied English Literature and Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia, is the author of Submarine, which was published to great critical acclaim in 1993 and was adapted into a feature film in 2010. Students were also invited to a screening of the film during welcome week, which offered up some fascinating questions following his talk. Joe read the opening chapter of Submarine, several of his poems and then asked the students to participate in a ‘middle-class adventure story’ which allowed the audience to decide on the direction of the plot. His talk was inspiring, touching, true to life and often outrageously funny. We look forward to welcoming Joe back to the School of English soon.
