As part of the Turner Contemporary’s Curiosity exhibition, three lecturers from the School of English – Ben Hickman, Juha Virtanen and Dorothy Lehane – will take part in an assembly and examination of a 1996 US court case concerning a taxonomy of dental services. Those gathered, which include practitioners from literature history, concrete poetry, intellectual property law, dentistry and taxonomy, will bear witness to the controversial document, “Thing 001038 (Uniform Code and Nomenclature)”, and decide if its descriptive text was an arrangement based on a mere process or system or an original expression protected as a work of literature or poetry. The assembly will take place on Saturday 14th September at 3pm and admittance is free.
