Social Activities
We have a variety of exciting social activities planned to complement our busy programme. These events are designed to offer students a chance to unwind, network, and build lasting connections in a more relaxed setting.
Canterbury Cathedral
At the heart of Canterbury stands Canterbury Cathedral, one of the oldest Christian structures in England and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dominating the skyline of the surrounding countryside, the cathedral was founded in 597 and rebuilt between 1070 and 1077. It became a major pilgrimage site following the murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket in 1170. As part of our programme, we will offer a guided tour of the Cathedral, where students can explore its stunning architecture, discover the stories behind its medieval stained glass, and learn about the pivotal moments in history that have shaped this iconic landmark.
Dover Castle and the White Cliffs of Dover
Located just 30 minutes from Canterbury by bus, Dover Castle and the White Cliffs of Dover are two of the most iconic landmarks in the United Kingdom, each rich in historical and cultural significance. Situated only 21 miles from France, Dover has long served as both the literal and symbolic gateway between Britain and continental Europe, making it a fitting destination for our EASP attendees.
Our group will visit Dover Castle, a medieval fortress originally built by William the Conqueror and expanded over the centuries due to its strategic importance, particularly during the Napoleonic Wars and World War II. From the castle’s centerpiece, students will be treated to spectacular views stretching across the English Channel to France, as well as breathtaking views of the famous White Cliffs of Dover. The cliffs, formed of chalk with streaks of black flint, rise up to 350 feet and have become enduring symbols of strength and resilience. This visit will provide an enriching glimpse into the deep history of Dover and its role in Britain’s heritage.
Margate
Located about 35 minutes from Canterbury by train, Margate is a seaside resort rich in both historic and contemporary significance. Popularized during the Victorian era, Margate is home to Dreamland, an amusement park that first opened in 1880. Today, it continues to delight visitors with vintage rides, including the oldest wooden roller coaster in the country.
The town boasts excellent restaurants and a vibrant community of artists, creatives, and musicians, contributing to a thriving arts scene characterized by numerous galleries, studios, and cultural events. A highlight is the Turner Contemporary Art Museum, renowned for its exhibitions and contributions to the arts. For those looking to enjoy the occasionally favorable British weather, Margate’s main beach offers a traditional seaside experience, making it a popular destination for anyone seeking a classic British beach outing. This visit promises to have something for every student, whether you’re interested in culture, history, or simply relaxing by the sea.
