Plastic Pollution in the River Stour
Recent headlines and documentaries have highlighted the growing problem of plastic waste as a global issue, but how does this affect our local environment and what can we do about it? In this exciting project, you will work with our academic staff both at sites along the River Stour and in our Chemistry labs, to investigate the extent of plastic pollution in our local area and learn more about the chemical techniques we can use to monitor and measure the impact on local ecosystems.
Who can apply?
This project is suitable for Year 12 or Level 3 Year 1 students who are studying A level Chemistry or an equivalent Level 3 Qualification (e.g. BTEC in Applied Science). You should also have achieved a minimum of Grade 4 in Science and Mathematics GCSEs. You may be interested in studying Chemistry at university or you may just want to develop your skills and confidence alongside our friendly staff and student ambassadors.
The project is open to students from all schools but priority will be given to those who meet our widening participation criteria.
What will I learn?
You will improve your practical skills in environmental chemistry, with a focus on sample collection, preparation and analysis. We want to show you the real life applications of some of the techniques you may already be familiar with through your studies, such as chromatography and spectrometry. You will return to your studies with increased confidence and knowledge beyond your specification, so you can stand out in future job or university applications.
When is the project?
The project will take place in the May half term holiday. You will need to commit to the full three days of the project, from Monday 30th May to Wednesday 1st June. You will need to make your own way to and from our university campus (CT2 7NZ) each day. From there, we will provide transport to various sites along the River Stour for the fieldwork components of the course.
Apply via HEAT: https://data.heat.ac.uk/event/apply/university-of-kent/plastic-pollution-in-the-river-stour
Applications will close on Friday the 29th of April, and those selected to participate in the project will be notified sometime mid-May.
This event is free to attend, but students must arrange their own transport to and from the University.
