Drill Hall student feedback forum

This is an open invitation to any student who would like to actively contribute to the development of our services.  The library management team would like to invite you to attend the next meeting of the User Group on Wednesday 14 May at 2pm in room DA002. Hot drinks and cakes will be available!

You will get the opportunity to meet senior members of the Drill Hall Library team as well as staff from each of the partner institutions.  We will update you on recent developments and other service enhancements that are planned for the future.

This is your opportunity to discuss any matters of concern and represent the views of other students to the library management team.

If you’re interested in attending please email j.m.targett@greenwich.ac.uk who will add you to the circulation list.  We would also ask that you advise her of any items you wish to raise so that they can be added to the agenda.

PC Cleaning

During w/c 14 April we are planning to clean and sanitise the PCs, keyboards and mice.  This means that on certain mornings some study space will be unavailable.  You may also be asked to vacate a study area at 7am to prepare for the cleaning.

The areas will be cleaned according to the schedule below:

  • Monday 14th April – Group Study Zone
  • Tuesday 15 April – Extended Silent Study Zone (the old Quiet Zone)
  • Weds 16 April – Silent Study Zone (far end of the library)

We have chosen next week to coincide with the Easter break and hope to keep the disruption to a minimum.

Suggestion Box for 24/7

Drill Hall Library will be providing a Suggestion Box at the Reception Desk during the Extended Opening Hours (24 March – 06 June 2014); so that users can provide feedback and comments about their experience.

This will help our team to understand your needs better and improve the service on an ongoing basis during the period. We value your opinion and will do our best to accommodate them where possible.

Trolleys and bookrests

Following feedback from you, we have recently purchased a number of trolley baskets. These are to help you when carrying lots of heavy books through the library. We have also bought a couple of book rests – these are intended to be used by students who find it physically difficult to hold a book open.

The trolleys are kept near the self-service kiosks and the book rests at the Welcome Desk.

24/7 Opening Update

We have more good news about 24/7 for you. The operational dates have now been extended by 2 weeks from 9 to 11 weeks. The library will now operate 24/7 from 24 March to 06 June 2014.

Similarly, the Extended Silent Zone scheme dates have been revised. The scheme will now run from 24 March to 06 June 2014 alongside 24/7. This will see the Quiet and Silent Zones becoming a wider Silent Zone to provide more silent and individual study space during the examinations period.

We will continue to post updates on our website; so keep checking and you can also follow us on Twitter and Facebook

Keeping your work safe

Please come along to one of our awareness sessions at the KeyPoint this week and find out how to safe-guard your work. Drop-in sessions will run on Tue 5/11, Wed, 6/11 and Thu 7/11 between 11-12.

Every year we see students in tears because they’ve lost their entire assignment.  This might be due to a USB malfunction or working on a document that they’ve emailed to themselves.  We want to prevent this from happening to you.

Follow our USB code:

1. USE with caution.  USBs can be your best friend or your worst enemy.  They are easily lost and they can corrupt your files.

2. SAVE to the network.  Use your network drive for all important work.  This is secure and backed up regularly.  Click on Start, Computer and select the appropriate network location below:

  • University of Greenwich = G:
  • University of Kent = Z:
  • Canterbury Christ Church = N:

3. BACKUP only.  Use your USB drive to save additional copies of your work and for transferring between home and campus.  Do not save your only copy.

The hidden perils of working from email attachments

Many students lose work opened from email attachments.  Before making any changes always use the Save As option and save it your network drive.  Close the document and open it from the network (not email) to ensure it has saved correctly.

We wish you well in your assignments this term.
