Calling all students!

Are you a Medway-registered student for University of Kent, University of Greenwich or Canterbury Christ Church University? If so, we’d love to hear your feedback about the Drill Hall Library and the services we offer.

The Library has a termly User Group, where academics and students meet over free tea, coffee and sandwiches to discuss developments in the Library, and to take feedback about what we do well and what we could do better. We want to hear from students from all three institutions, undergraduates and postgraduates. The next meeting is in room DA002 in the Library on the 29th October 2014 at 12 noon.

All students are invited to attend and those who stay for the whole meeting can claim a £5 voucher for use in the Archibald Hay Mess, or £5 print credit. Please just confirm that you’d like to attend by emailing us at dhl-feedback@gre.ac.uk. You can also use that address to send us your thoughts even if you can’t attend the meeting.

Our slogan here is ‘Your Library, your future’, so what you think is really important to us. I look forward to hearing from you!

Archibald Hay Mess – Art

You may have spotted that over the summer our library cafe, The Archibald Hay Mess, has acquired a brand new wall mural by the artist Wei Ong aka Silent Hobo.   As custodians of the Drill Hall we are very aware of the building’s naval history and felt that we wanted to do something special to mark the occasion of the Centenary of the First World War.

We therefore launched a public art commission and a number of artists responded to our brief to create an original artwork that drew inspiration from the local community (past, present and future), the history of the Drill Hall and Chatham Maritime heritage as well as representing all that is new and vibrant in the area and the library.

Future-dhll_1We think Silent Hobo has done a brilliant job in capturing the brief in a modern yet sympathetic way that has something for everyone.  A time lapse video of him in action is available to watch on our You Tube channel.

We’re planning an official reception evening towards the end of October to mark the commission and to give everyone the opportunity to meet Silent Hobo.  All staff and students at Medway are welcome to attend and more details about this will be announced shortly.

UPDATE – The official reception will be help on Thursday 30th October from 5-8pm.  This will mark the commission and give everyone the opportunity to meet Silent Hobo. All staff and students at Medway are welcome to attend.

Welcome (back)!

Welcome to all of our new students, and welcome back to all of those continuing your study at Medway! It’s been a busy summer in the Drill Hall Library and we’d like to tell you about some of our news:

  • There is a stunning new Art Commission in Archibald Hay Mess – this was installed over the summer by artist Silent Hobo. Do let us know what you think, as we’re very proud of it!
  • Our Opening Hours have been extended so that we’re open until midnight every day from the 22nd September until 19th December. Our desks are also open until 9pm every week day. Later in the year we’ll be open 24/7 to help during your exams
  • We’ve made the Reservation Shelves bigger and more secure, making book reservations more reliable and more easy to find
  • We’ve completely transformed the group practice rooms DA004 and DA005 – these now have two linked screens in each room (each has one screen that is 65 inches – great for group work and presentation practice). The furniture is all brand new, and with the combination of cutting edge technology such as the ability to present from wireless devices we can’t wait to see people making the most of them. They will be open for bookings very shortly
  • There are new chairs for the group rooms on the 1st floor above the Group Study Zone – these new chairs are very easy to move around and are great for groups. We’ll also be getting new chairs for the PCs in the two training rooms soon
  • All of the printers in the library have been upgraded, and we now have more colour printers for you
  • We’ve added some sofas around the Group and Quiet zones. Very comfy!
  • The computers in the library now all have Office 2013 and Google Chrome as well as IE11 on them
  • As a present from us to you, we’re giving away Drill Hall Library water bottles and book bags. These have primarily been given out at library tours so far and are proving very popular!
  • We’ve replaced the water fountains with new ones that mean you can fill up water bottles more easily
  • The CD and DVD collections have been smartened up so that they’re easier for you to browse. You can borrow these by using the self-service machines

We’d love to hear your feedback about the Drill Hall, and you can always speak to any member of staff or click on the Feedback tab on our website. We also have a User Group every term where you can come and share your thoughts on the library. We’ll advertise this later in the term. To keep up to date with what’s happening in the library follow us on Twitter (@drillhalllib), find us on Facebook (Drill Hall Library).

Summer shelf moves

Over the coming weeks we will be carrying out some essential shelf moving within the library. The areas being worked on will be partitioned off with barriers, but books will still be available. If you need to get a book from a closed area any member of staff will be happy to help you.

User satisfaction survey

Let us know your thoughts about the services at the Drill Hall Library, including the trial of 24/7 opening. What do you like?  What don’t you like? What could we do better?

We’re just asking for about 10 minutes of your time to complete our on-line survey.  As an added bonus, two lucky participants will be selected at random to win £25 in vouchers.

Your feedback is really helpful to us and we use these surveys to plan for the future.  So please have your say!

iPad Loan Scheme Extended

Due to the popularity of our iPad lending scheme, we’ve extended the trial period until the end of June 2014.  Over the course of the next couple of weeks we’ll be asking everyone who has borrowed one so far to complete a short survey.  This will inform any changes we may need to improve the scheme for next year.  Thank you to everyone who has already given feedback.  We will also be updating any Apps that are out of date.

For more information visit our iPad webpage.
