On Wednesday 22 April, we were delighted to welcome over 70 Kent Law School alumni to a reception at The Old Bailey hosted by alumnus His Honour Judge Mark Lucraft KC, Recorder of London.
The evening celebrated three important milestones: the University of Kent’s 60th Anniversary, ten years since the opening of The Wigoder Law Building, and the launch of the Lord Etherton Awards. Over that decade, the Kent Law School has continued to build on its reputation for critical thinking, social justice, and global engagement. It has not only educated outstanding legal professionals, but has also contributed meaningfully to public debate and the pursuit of a more just society.

From Barristers and High Court Judges to recent graduates just beginning their careers, it was a pleasure to meet with so many alumni and to celebrate their successes and also reconnect, share stories, and strengthen the bonds across the generations of Kent Law School.
The Grand Hall of The Old Bailey provided an impressive setting and those in attendance were fortunate to receive a tour of Court One, the venue’s most historic courtroom, which has hosted some of Britain’s most famous trials.
Hilary Edridge, Head of Development and Alumni Engagement, said: …..”It was such a joy to see so many familiar and new faces come together. Evenings like this remind us how strong our alumni community is and how important it is to stay connected, share stories and celebrate each other’s successes. The occasion perfectly captured the spirit and strength of the Kent Law School across generations”.

The event also marked the launch of the Lord Etherton Awards for Legal Excellence and Opportunity thanks to a generous legacy bequeathed to the University of Kent by The Rt Hon the Lord Etherton GBE KC PC who was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by the University of Kent in July, 2018.
Lord Etherton’s enduring connection to Kent Law School reflected his belief that legal education should be open to all, regardless of background. His generous bequest will support future students to realise their potential and pursue meaningful legal careers.
