Annabel Gale is the University’s 2024/25 First 500 Scholar. She is in her first year of a Classical Studies degree, having always had a strong interest in ancient history, literature and art.
Thanks to the generosity of donations from Kent’s first cohort of students (known as the First 500), the scholarship provides recipients with £2,000 for each year of their degree programme to ease financial hardship and ensure students can make the most of their time at Kent.
For Annabel, going to university had always been a dream but the significant cost was causing her concern. Fortunately, her hard work at school paid off and her A-Level grades meant she was eligible to apply for the scholarship.
The additional income has been ‘absolutely amazing’ and enables her to have a fulfilling and well rounded university experience. She has been able buy essential books and cover the costs for excursions to museums, exhibitions, and travel to support her course. She has even been able to try a new interest by joining the University’s Fencing Club.
Without the scholarship, Annabel’s university experience would be very different. Money worries would likely distract from her studies and affect the overall result of her degree.
To the donors supporting her studies, Annabel says: “Thank you! This scholarship motivates me to succeed. University life at Kent is fantastic. I love the engaging lectures and the friendly community. I’m working hard to hone my academic writing and research skills and am enjoying exploring the beautiful city with friends.”
Thinking of donating to a scholarship at Kent? It’s a wonderful way to help students like Annabel focus on learning and worry less about finances. You really do make a huge difference!
