KBS graduate Russell Carr delivers a captivating talk to MSc Marketing students

Thanks to Russell Carr from Vodafone Business for the captivating talk he gave to the MSc Marketing students at Kent Business School. Russell graduated from Kent in 2008 and was delighted to return and give back to this generation of students.

His talk provided numerous insights across different business sectors into the groundbreaking work Vodafone Business are doing in the Internet of Things with smart buildings. Through the use of sensors organisations can accurately monitor real time energy consumption in a building which can identify potential waste, enable pre-emptive maintenance, and cut costs.

We also learned how sensors can be used in the care sector to identify when an elderly person has had a fall and alert staff something which can be life saving.

The talk was entertaining with Russ even explaining how smart sensors could improve exam performance! This was an example of how office productivity can be improved by identifying excess levels of carbon dioxide in a room, which is then solved by simply opening windows.

Russ finished his talk by offering students practical tips for getting those first jobs after their Master’s course and kindly offered to help our students.

The module convenor, Dr Eddie Luo, commented:

Russ is a naturally engaging speaker and provided real life insights into how what we teach can be applied in practice

The talk was invaluable to the students, in the words of Aleks Grela, MSc Marketing student.

It was inspiring to hear Russ’s experience at KBS and how it shaped him in his personal and professional life. We are very grateful to be given an opportunity like this, thank you Russell Carr and Vodafone
