Alumnus to climb Mount Kilimanjaro

Rob O'Mahony

Rod O’Mahony (Eliot College, English & American Literature, 1979-83) will be attempting to climb Mount Kilimanjaro for charity in March 2022! Rod will be taking on this amazing challenge to raise money for Alzheimer’s Research UK (ARUK).

Rod said: “About 3 years ago, in a belated attempt to get into better shape after many mostly sedentary years, I started going along to my local Parkrun on Saturday mornings. ARUK is the charity partner of Parkrun, and in October 2019 they sent an email to park runners seeking participants for a charity climb of Mount Kilimanjaro. I should no doubt have slept on it, but signed up before caution got the better of me, and am now trying hard to get fit enough for the climb.

“The event was originally scheduled for March 2021, but the pandemic of course intervened. It was postponed to October, but that also proved a bit premature, so is now due to go ahead in March 2022. With Tanzania now off the UK’s red list for travel, I and the other participants are hopeful that we will be flying out on March 2nd.”

Rod has set up a fund-raising page at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/omahonys-on-tour, if you would like to sponsor him.

The climb is being organised on behalf of ARUK by Charity Challenge, and more detailed information can be found on their web site at https://www.charitychallenge.com/expedition/itinerary/3102/Kilimanjaro-Summit-Climb-Lemosho-Route.
