Educating aspiring doctors: The Kent and Medway Medical School

A medical school student
Kent and Medway Medical School (KMMS) is an exciting collaboration between Canterbury Christ Church University and the University of Kent, and draws on the research and teaching strengths of both universities. Based in Canterbury, KMMS will educate aspiring doctors to deliver 21st century medicine. The original bid was judged against proposals from many other UK universities and was awarded 100 Home and EU places in 2018, KMMS will welcome its founding students this September and has attracted talented students from all backgrounds.

The Founding Dean, Professor Chris Holland has built an outstanding team around him bringing experience from medical schools around the UK and beyond. The team has focused on innovation throughout the planning of the school so that they emulate best practice and develop new solutions where they would benefit the students. The school will help to transform the future of healthcare in our region and will provide graduates with skills in digital health, innovation, leadership and management as well as the necessary clinical and professional abilities.

KMMS students will benefit from state-of-the-art facilities on both the Christ Church and Kent campuses. These include a high-fidelity simulated hospital suite, the region’s first GP simulation suite and an anatomy learning centre that will teach anatomical sciences using both cadaveric dissection and pro-section as well as radiological and imaging techniques such as ultrasound. Many of our innovative approaches to planning our leading-edge curriculum have benefitted from generous donations from across the UK.

The school has built exciting new relationships with partners across the NHS in Kent and Medway from community, primary , secondary, acute and mental health care settings. These connections will allow KMMS to build a programme of high-quality placements across our region.

The first KMMS students will graduate at Canterbury Cathedral in 2025 with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree jointly awarded by Christ Church and Kent universities.
