The Christine and Ian Bolt Scholarship was set up in memory of Christine Bolt, Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Kent, by her husband, Ian Bolt. It supports postgraduate Social Sciences and Humanities students to undertake a sustained period or research in the United States. Ian had made arrangements to leave a legacy to the University of Kent and when he passed away, the University received a gift through his will to the fund which has gone on to support three students a year on average.
The scholarships are aimed at students whose area of research has an American element or where the centre of expertise or an important source of research material is located in the US.
In 2018, Dan Avery was successful in his application to the Christine and Ian Bolt Scholarship. Thanks to the award, he was able to carry out a two week archival trip to the University of Virginia, Charlottesville to continue his research.
“The visit to the United States was a success and provided vital information and sources for my dissertation and something that I would not be able to achieve without the assistance from the Christine and Ian Bolt Scholarship.
“I would advise any postgraduate researcher, especially those that intent to continue onto a career in academia, to consider applying to the Christine and Ian Bolt scholarship.”
