Are you looking to enhance your professional skills and advance your career with a degree that’s work related and relevant to you?

The University of Kent’s part-time, multi-professional PCert and MSc Advanced and Specialist Healthcare  programme starting in September 2019, is suitable for all qualified, registered healthcare professionals who wish to continue to study for a full MSc award.

This part-time, flexible programme is ideal for those working in primary, secondary and community care, including doctors, GP Fellows, nurses, dentists, dental care professionals, physiotherapists and therapists, who wish to develop their academic skills alongside their professional role. Taught by expert academics and clinicians, the postgraduate programme aims to develop knowledge as well as critical understanding, evidence based practice and research skills.

Entry requirements

Entry onto the programme is via professional qualification in a relevant field (healthcare) with a minimum of two years post qualification experience within the relevant area of practice. Alternatively, the successful completion of a University of Kent PCert or PDip in a health-related subject area. You must be able to demonstrate personal suitability and be within a suitable workplace setting.

Programme structure, content and delivery

Teaching is structured around a series of extended taught weekends (on average 6 weekends a year at our Medway campus), consisting of taught sessions and work based learning, self-study time, case study analysis, individual and group tutorials, project and presentations.

Stage PCert, 60 credits

Core modules:

  • Induction days: Wed 25 and Thu 26 September 2019
  • Evidence Based Practice (Health) (WL830) 15 credits: Fri 27 – Sun 29 September 2019
  • Inter-professional working (WL814) 15 credits: Fri 27 – Sun 29 March 2020
  • Plus an optional module(s) equalling 30 credits from across CPP or University catalogue.

Optional modules may include:

  • Professional Standard Setting for Professional Practice (WL838) 30 credits (Audit and Quality Improvement)
  • Introduction to Evaluation within Professional Context (WL912) 15 credits
  • Special Area of Study (WL825) 30 credits or (WL874) 15 credits

All optional modules are subject to availability.

Stage PDip, 60 credits

Core modules:  

  • Research Skills: (WL882) 30 credits or (WL817) 15 credits  
  • Plus an optional module(s) equalling 30 or 45 credits from across CPP or University catalogue.

Stage MSc, 60 credits

  • Work-related Project and Dissertation (WL816) 60 credits

Teaching and assessment

Teaching methods are designed to support learning with empathies on the application of theory to professional practice. Active participation is encouraged throughout with lecturers, seminars, tutorials discussion, case studies and work-related activity. Assessment is based on a combination of written assignments and / or portfolio of evidence to address the intended leaning outcomes, and a final stage dissertation.

Fees

For the 2019-20 academic year, the fees are £2,780 per stage. Annual fees for 2020/21 are subject to annual fee incremental rises.

Government loans for Postgraduate degrees are available (subject to eligibility criteria).
