On Friday 7 March we hosted an International Women’s Day Networking event and welcomed over 50 women to the University of Kent.
Working in partnership with Kent Sport and the University’s EDI team, we invited women from across the University and Kent to the Pears building for an afternoon of networking, learning and sharing.
“Without doubt one of the best events I’ve been to in such a long time. Sandra Heyworth and the whole team involved, provided something very special. The other attendees were also a pleasure to spend time with. I have come away educated, entertained, so inspired and a complete convert to such events. I drove home on a complete high…my cup runneth over!” – Helen Lawson, one of our attendees.
The event started with a delicious vegetarian buffet lunch and networking before we headed into the lecture theatre for our talks sessions. We were delighted to have Rebecca Smith, from the Kent Business School chair the event for us.
Dr Katie Cartledge, a local GP and Senior lecturer at KMMS discussed women’s health and nutrition. During her talk, Katie used stories of women she has met or treated as examples whilst discussing key topics like period poverty, endometriosis, menopause and nutrition.
“Dr. Katie Cartledge shed light on women’s health and nutrition, sharing eye-opening statistics and powerful stories of the women she has worked with.”
Next up we heard from Olivia France, lecturer at the Kent and Medway Medical School (KMMS) who helped us debunk myths around the female anatomy and encouraged us all to feel more comfortable in knowing our own bodies.
“Olivia France challenged misconceptions about female anatomy, breaking down long-standing myths about the reproductive system.”
Lastly we heard from Toni Abiodun, Vice-President for Student Engagement at Kent Student Union. Toni discussed defining herself as a Black woman at the University of Kent, sharing her experiences as a student and the brilliant campaigns she has worked on during her time as VP such as the #TellYourStory campaign.
“Toni Abiodun, an inspiring Kent graduate, spoke passionately about intersectionality and her experience as a Black woman navigating academia, the workplace, and society.”
A huge thank you to everyone that attended, we look forward to seeing you at another event at the University of Kent soon!
“A fantastic afternoon of learning, laughter and inspiration. Here’s to continuing the conversation and driving impact!” – Dr Blessing Enakimio, attendee.
