International Festival of Projections
University of Kent

18-20 March

The International Festival of Projections, one of the University of Kent’s Beacon projects, will be taking place across Canterbury and Medway campuses from the 18-20 March. A free arts festival, the programme will feature exclusive screenings, work from award winning artists, showcase University research, interactive sound and art installations, workshops, talks, walks and more.

Highlights include:

Future Signals – a morse code conversation between the University and the city of Canterbury, using beams of light from signal lamps to send messages. In celebration of the University’s 50th anniversary on Friday evening 19:00-19:30, leading thinkers will transmit a short hope, wish or aspiration for the next 50 years in just 5 words, projected through morse code. Everyone in Canterbury can join in – by flicking bedside lamps on and off,  pointing torches pointing out of windows, and shining phones at the sky. Tune in at 19:00 to CSRfm 97.4FM to hear the messages.

Test Your Strength in a new audio-visual installation, with spectacular illuminated video-mapping which rises and falls up the outside of a building in response to your hit. Experience all the fun of the fair, in a new digital form. Swing the mallet and see how strong you really are.

A series of free cinema experiences will include a special drive-in cinema with live band on Saturday evening, an immersive outdoor film screening on Friday night, and a packed programme for a new cinema on campus over the whole weekend including films, presentations and talks.
A grand piano will play live outside the Jarman Building on Sunday afternoon, accompanying a series of film screenings, and a series of screens across the campus will play host to silent films, from early Hitchcock and black and white footage of Canterbury, to contemporary artists films, and pop music videos.
There are lots of opportunities to get involved, including a workshop where you can make your own projector using nothing but a shoebox, magnifying glass and a paperclip; an attempt to create a human megaphone; a poetry workshop out in woodland; a make your own animation workshop, and an event on Sunday evening where you can bring your own projector along and screen images to a live performance by electronic musician Tom Vek.
