Congratulations to Dr Cecilia Sayad, Senior Lecturer in Film, who has been shortlisted for Best Monograph by the British Association of Film, Television and Screen Studies (BAFTSS) with her text The Ghost in the Image: Technology and Reality in the Horror Genre.
The book, which was published in 2021, offers a new take on the place that supernatural phenomena occupy in everyday life by examining the horror genre in fiction, documentary, and participative modes. Covering a variety of media, it investigates our expectations regarding the ability of photography and video to work as evidence and explores our obsession with documenting everyday life in the hope that our cameras will reveal something extraordinary.
Following the shortlist announcement, Dr Sayad said: ‘Having The Ghost in the Image shortlisted for this BATFSS Award is an incredible form of recognition, especially as it stands alongside amazing books. I am very pleased’.
The prize will be announced at the BAFTSS Annual Conference next week at the University of Lincoln.
