A huge congratulations to Kent Drama graduate Kyrah Gray who will perform stand-up comedy for Mo Gilligan and Friends:The Black British Takeover Part 2 at the O2 arena tonight. Kyrah started her comedy career at Kent in 2019, where she performed her debut comedy set at Monkeyshine during her third year stand-up module. Kyrah has also recently been signed to Off The Kerb which is one of the leading comedy agencies in the UK.
‘One to watch… compelling stage presence: easygoing yet with a natural vibrancy that buoys the room. The charisma is backed with solid material’
– Chortle
Dr Oliver Double, head of the School of Arts, previously interviewed Kyrah for his podcast, Proper Job Gradcast. In the episode they speak about starting out as a stand-up comedian. Kyrah also speaks about balancing day jobs with a comedy career, and how the transferrable skills you get in a drama degree set you up for even the most conventional job. Dr Double had this to say about the success of his former student:
I first saw Kyrah perform in a very funny comedy sketch that was part of an assessment at the end of her first year. It was very clear that she was a gifted comic performer. In her third year, I taught her on our stand-up comedy module and again, she just aced it, getting consistently big laughs. I’m so proud of her!
This is a fantastic achievement and we can’t wait to see what Kyrah does next!
