Dr Hans Maes, Senior Lecturer in the History of Art at the School of Arts, has recently published a book entitled Wat is sexy? Een oefening in feministische filosofie [What is Sexy? An Exercise in Feminist Philosophy] (Letterwerk, 2019).
What makes a person sexy? And who actually determines that? Do the same standards apply to men and women? How should we, as a society, deal with the increasing pressure to look ‘hot’?
In this book philosopher Hans Maes seeks an answer to these questions. Along the way he also reflects on sex symbols; the role of art, power, and wealth; and the notion of ‘sexual authenticity’.
