Inside Out symposium and performance of The Duck

Poster for The Duck, to be performed in The Aphra Theatre

This week, the School of Arts will host a two day symposium as part of the Playing A/Part research project, led by Nicola Shaughnessy, Professor of Performance in the Department of Drama and Theatre, and funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. The symposium is entitled ‘Inside Out: Autistic Identities, Participatory Research and Gender’, and it will be held in the Grimond Building at Kent on Thursday 4 and Friday 5 July 2019.

The aim of the event is to map the current state of play in researching autistic identities and to facilitate dialogue between autistic and non-autistic researchers, as well as autistic people who are interested in engaging with autism research, within a supportive environment.

Each day will consist of a dialogue event (short presentations by two invited speakers addressing key questions), panel discussions, open space forums (focussed on posters and examples of practice) and workshop activity. The symposium will bring autistic and non-autistic researchers, practitioners and members of the public into dialogue about future research, new directions, new methods and creative opportunities. For the full programme, please see the page here.

Tickets cost £25 for one-day attendance or £40 for both days, with fee waivers available upon request. For further details, please see the Eventbrite page here: www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/inside-out-autistic-identities-participatory-research-gender-tickets-62504356212

In conjuction with the symposium, the University will also host a special performance of The Duck, a funny and moving new one-woman play by autistic writer and poet, Rhi Lloyd-Williams. The play is an exploration of life after a late-diagnosis of autism, and will be performed in the Aphra Theatre on Thursday 4 July at 6pm. Tickets to this performance cost £7, and may be bought via The Gulbenkian here: https://thegulbenkian.co.uk/events/the-duck/
