The second part of a podcast on theatre director Jerzy Grotowski (1933-1999), featuring Paul Allain, Professor of Theatre and Performance in the School of Arts and Dean of the Graduate School, is now available.
The podcast is part of a series hosted on Culture.pl, produced by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, a national cultural institution promoting Poland and Polish culture worldwide. Part one of the podcast was posted in early December.
The second part of the podcast follows Grotowski’s emigration to America, following the declaration of Martial Law in Poland, and his subsequent relocation to Italy.
‘Grotowski attracted a lot of controversy generally throughout his work,’ Paul explains in the episode, ‘his practices and performances were called elitist, whereas I think he was just carefully managing the theatre experience for small numbers of people… He took people outside of their daily routines into new communities to establish different ways of working and being with each other.’
