A IWMW 2012 lecture: Accessibility beyond WCAG

We talk about accessibility often but we can always improve the way we organise and how we implement accessibility instead of developing a product first and then working out how to implement afterwards. As staff we use similar devices in an institution. Standard monitors or laptops but what about net books, iPads, large laptops with low resolution. How does it change accessibility/site design etc. Who is our audience? Do we even really know or do we just think that we know? Current and potential International students, disabled students, students with learning difficulties, students from a low income background and so many more.

She also touched on such a basic concept that we constantly overlook that falls outside the scope of the talk but is always relevant. To protect ourselves we default our answer to no when talking about innovation and developing difficult ideas or concepts that maybe time consuming/difficult or even boring. If we change our answer to force investigation and imagination we can create really great things. As a business it is our job to fulfil the business requirements the best we possibly can and to present those options (good and bad) to the appropriate people/customers.
