Arts-Based Research Methods

This session – anchored in the arts-based research methods – proposes to address two methodological approaches with a qualitative and ethnographic bias towards precarized or vulnerable groups – the young NEETs and some LGBTQI+ segments – respectively in Portugal and Brazil. Its major innovation is that art – music, street art and video/documentary – makes it possible to capture, perceive and internalize forms of knowledge, in certain cases inaccessible through the application of traditional research methods and techniques. It is through these methods that it becomes possible to understand, at times, the dynamics of dialogues between multiple and complex realities and forms of knowledge that, in their essence, exist at various levels of consciousness, temporalities and spatialities.
The methodological approaches presented here prove to be an incentive to participation, since they facilitate forms and contents of expressiveness, which, through conventional methods, would be difficult to capture.
Professor Paula Guerra is Professor in the Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto, Portugal. Her presentation is entitled: ‘O Bairro é Nosso! Youth Arts of Doing the Everyday Life.’
Professor Vitor Grunvald is Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. His presentation is entitled: ‘Between Art and Anthropology: Reflections on Documentary Tactics out of Family Stronger Project.’
