{"id":2858,"date":"2017-08-01T09:25:20","date_gmt":"2017-08-01T08:25:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/webdev\/?p=2858"},"modified":"2018-07-27T11:26:15","modified_gmt":"2018-07-27T10:26:15","slug":"feedback-on-sport-sciences-designs-and-editorial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/webdev\/2017\/08\/01\/feedback-on-sport-sciences-designs-and-editorial\/","title":{"rendered":"Feedback on Sport Sciences designs and editorial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">We did <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uxbooth.com\/articles\/the-art-of-guerrilla-usability-testing\/\">guerrilla user testing<\/a> with 10 people (8 students, a staff member and by chance a parent of a sport sciences student) in the Library.<\/p>\n<p>Using the home, about and facilities page designs for School of Sport and Exercise Sciences (part of our <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/webdev\/2017\/07\/18\/school-pilots\/\">school pilots project<\/a>), we received feedback on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keys tasks &#8211; finding a course, staff profile, about the school\/facilities <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Content design<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Editorial style and tone<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Key tasks<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone found a way to search for courses &#8211; the top section links were popular for navigating<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When asked to find a staff profile, everyone used \u2018People\u2019 link <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The term \u2018People\u2019 was thought to be broader than \u2018Staff\u2019 profiles. There was a comment that \u2018People\u2019 sounded friendlier<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rankings for the school were expected to be found in the \u2018About\u2019 section<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There was a comment that the global navigation links (research, study, discover) didn\u2019t look clickable<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/webdev\/files\/2017\/07\/testing-pages.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2867\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/webdev\/files\/2017\/07\/testing-pages.jpg\" alt=\"Selection of printouts used for user testing\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/webdev\/files\/2017\/07\/testing-pages.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/webdev\/files\/2017\/07\/testing-pages-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/webdev\/files\/2017\/07\/testing-pages-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/webdev\/files\/2017\/07\/testing-pages-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/a><\/h2>\n<h2>Content design<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Design<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Positive comments &#8211; \u201cmodern\u201d, \u201cvisually appealing\u201d, \u201cclean\u201d and \u201cless cluttered\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Imagery<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strong, quality imagery which works in tandem with good stories and marketing messages \u2018incites more interest\u2019 making users more likely to engage with the content<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Media<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liked short videos, particularly students talking about their experiences.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interactive 360 degree tour concept for the facilities page was very popular enabling. prospective students to get a better feel for the facilities and environment.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gallery concept received good feedback.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Content elements<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Positive comments about profiles and student quotes which use images of people.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like\u00a0key facts\/figures panel\u00a0at the top of the about page.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Image\/editorial balance<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We tested two variations of the About page. One was more image-led (showcase style). The other more editorial (standard content-page style).<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They were positive about both approaches. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some preferring a stronger editorial content so that it didn\u2019t double up on the homepage showcase style and provided the option for more context.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Editorial style and tone<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We asked some people to read the About us editorial content:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tone was \u201cpersonable\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About the right balance \u201cnot too chatty\u201d, but \u201cnot dumbed down\u201d either<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liked the shorter, scannable sections of text &#8211; \u201ca simple nice way of writing the content\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for specific content, careers\/post degree and locations were mentioned as important<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Users were able to achieve key tasks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Content and visual design received positive feedback on all examples<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first homepage received better feedback due to stronger imagery and profile &#8211; feedback fairly split<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A more editorial approach to the About us page, may help distinguish it more clearly from the homepage and provide more context<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interactive content using videos, 360 degree tours and gallery were popular &#8211;
