{"id":2458,"date":"2016-04-28T15:19:34","date_gmt":"2016-04-28T14:19:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/webdev\/?p=2458"},"modified":"2016-06-07T16:31:45","modified_gmt":"2016-06-07T15:31:45","slug":"guerrilla-user-testing-feedback","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/webdev\/2016\/04\/28\/guerrilla-user-testing-feedback\/","title":{"rendered":"Guerrilla user testing feedback"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>We did <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/webdev\/2016\/02\/26\/guerrilla-user-testing-beta-homepage\/#going-guerrilla\">guerrilla user testing<\/a> with students to get feedback on:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#bar\">beta Kent bar<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#form\">Kent IT activation form<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#header\">beta website header designs<\/a> <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"bar\"><b>Beta Kent bar<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>We wanted to get feedback on our <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/webdev\/2016\/03\/18\/beta-audience-bar\/\">Kent bar<\/a>, this is the blue strip at the top of the design which contains the audience links.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We asked initial questions to understand how students find key systems. Many students use the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/student\">Student Guide<\/a> to link to student systems (mostly Moodle, timetables, SDS, Email).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some students use quick links on the current site, but find it too long. Most are likely to\u00a0use Google. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the new beta design, most didn&#8217;t spot the new student link at first. \u00a0Many scrolled to the bottom of the page and looked in the footer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most interacted with the new student link panel without trouble. They liked the prioritised student links. It was not always clear that you could search for more student systems. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once they found the student link, they appreciated the search autocomplete and thought it was useful. There were positive comments about the departments search autocomplete. Some people prefer to browse a list, so there should be a departments A-Z link.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"line-height: 1.42857;\">Summary<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.42857;\">: the students found the student links on the beta Kent bar useful and an improvement on the current quick links. Some didn&#8217;t spot the link at first. This may be due to students&#8217; familiarity with \u00a0the current website. It would be good to add a link to the Student Guide on the footer. Student will often use\u00a0Google.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Kent bar will become ubiquitous across key systems. Everyone found it straightforward. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One uncertainty was the email masking on the &#8220;Check your email&#8221; screen. Most understood that the email design meant that it was masked. One person did find it confusing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All interacted as expected on the password screen and understood it. One person struggled to type a correct password in as she had caps lock on without realising. There was positive feedback about the ticks highlighting when you met the password requirements. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One person didn&#8217;t spot the ticks highlighting at first. The &#8220;show&#8221; checkbox, for the password, wasn&#8217;t used often. It would have been useful for the last user who kept retyping an incorrect password in caps. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Summary<\/strong>: users found it straightforward and simple to use. They liked the clean design. Improve the email masking design by using clearer masking symbols. Consider making the masked email less prominent or add some supporting text to explain. The green checks for the password requirements could be a bit brighter to get more attention. Show a message when cap lock is active. Change \u201cshow\u201d checkbox to \u201cshow password\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2465 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/webdev\/files\/2016\/04\/kent-it-account-password.jpg\" alt=\"Kent IT account new account activation form\" width=\"1746\" height=\"1418\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/webdev\/files\/2016\/04\/kent-it-account-password.jpg 1746w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/webdev\/files\/2016\/04\/kent-it-account-password-300x244.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/webdev\/files\/2016\/04\/kent-it-account-password-768x624.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/webdev\/files\/2016\/04\/kent-it-account-password-1024x832.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1746px) 100vw, 1746px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"header\"><b>Beta website header designs<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We showed users 7 different header designs. All header designs had the same text content. They varied by different colours and small design elements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Users selected their favourite design and 2nd and 3rd favourites. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some had a light header design, others darker. Although there was variability in choice, there was a trend towards the darker header. Some mentioned that the improved contrast helped focus between header and content. Others thought that the lighter head was &#8220;too white and plain&#8221;. Shades of blue created a softer contrast linking header to content. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Summary<\/strong>: the darker header design is worth developing further. It creates a clearer separation between header\/navigation and content. This helps users to find and focus on the content.
