{"id":54,"date":"2014-12-16T09:02:28","date_gmt":"2014-12-16T09:02:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/unikentsportsci\/?p=54"},"modified":"2015-08-03T16:22:12","modified_gmt":"2015-08-03T16:22:12","slug":"university-of-kent-opportunity-fund","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/unikentsportsci\/2014\/12\/16\/university-of-kent-opportunity-fund\/","title":{"rendered":"University of Kent Opportunity Fund"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the past few months the University of Kent\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/sportsciences\/\">School of Sport and Exercise Sciences<\/a> (SSES) has engaged tenaciously with Outreach work into local communities. The school has had the privilege of running numerous projects and engage school children with the world of sports science.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/sportsciences\/staff\/Academic\/j-dickinson.html\">Dr John Dickinson<\/a>, Lecturer in Physiology &amp; Head of the Respiratory Clinic here at the University of Kent has been at the forefront of our activity with UK school children. Dr Dickinson\u2019s work has involved introducing children to the science of exercise and physical activity. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/sportsciences\/Insidesportsscience.html\">Inside Sports Science<\/a> initiative featured alongside activities from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bhf.org.uk\/#&amp;panel1-1\">British Heart Foundation<\/a> and others at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bcs.com\/pages\/default.asp\">British Cardiovascular Society<\/a> annual children&#8217;s event back on 3<sup>rd<\/sup> June 2014 at Manchester Central (Central 5-7).<\/p>\n<p>The university\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/wcss2014\/\">World Congress of Cycling Science<\/a> also hosted a school\u2019s event at The Rose Bowl in Leeds. SSES invited pupils from four Leeds primary schools to attend the event on Wednesday 2<sup>nd<\/sup> July 2014.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.habdirect.co.uk\/\"> HaB direct<\/a>supported the event, providing specialised equipment to inspire children to learn more about science and become more physically active.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Dickinson said: \u2018These events are a great way to encourage young people to explore different ways science is used in sport. Funding for the student volunteers to work on the projects in Manchester and Leeds was provided by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/giving\/opportunityfund\/\">University of Kent Opportunity Fund<\/a>.
