Following his ongoing research on professional sport organisations, employment experiences and worker’s welfare, SSES Sport Management researcher Dr Geoffery Z. Kohe – in collaboration with Dr Laura Purdy, Edge Hill University – has recently had two chapters included in the new Routledge Handbook of Athlete Welfare.
The book is the first substantial international compilation of athlete welfare and has been published in response to growing debate and criticism of the sport industry and its duties of care and responsibilities to sport communities.
The first of Dr Kohe’s contributions focus on European sport organisations approaches to sports workers’ welfare during career transitions. The second piece examines the sustainability of professional sport workers’ careers during the time of geopolitical conflict in Ukraine.
Collectively, the work advances discussion on who professional sport workers are, how working lives are shaped by organisational practices, and what future directions the sport industry may need to take.
