SSES’s relocation to Canterbury from 2021

The School of Sport and Exercise Sciences will be relocating to the Canterbury campus in September 2021.

This exciting move, to the larger of our two campuses, will allow us to provide enhanced facilities, study and social space for you as well as helping you become part of a broader academic community that we’re confident will further enhance your skills, employability and student experience. Further information about the Canterbury campus and its facilities can be found here.

FAQs

Why is the school moving to Canterbury?

Our main reason for making this decision is to enhance the student experience. Re-locating the School of Sport & Exercise Science (SSES) to the main campus would not only enhance our academic and research programme, but also the overall student experience due to the availability of more sports and recreation facilities.

Will the School’s facilities and clinics be impacted by the move?

We have excellent custom-built facilities, which have been developed to support the content of our degree programmes. They include the latest equipment, such as our:

  • anti-gravity treadmill, originally developed to help NASA astronauts to exercise in space
  • cycling and rowing ergometers to measure exercise capacity and performance
  • isokinetic dynamometer to measure muscle and joint function
  • brain and muscle stimulators
  • 3D motion analysis
  • imaging and treatment ultrasound
  • gait analysis
  • force pedals
  • blood testing
  • gas analysis equipment
  • rehabilitation gymnasium.

These facilities and clinics will be moving with us to Canterbury. The heat and altitude environmental chamber will remain at Medway Park, however will still be accessible to students. You can read more about our specialist facilities and equipment here.

What sports and recreation facilities are available on the Canterbury campus?

Kent Sport offers a range of ways to get involved with sport and be active during your time at University. The main Sports Centre is only a stone’s throw away from where the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences will be based, in the Chipperfield Building. Kent Sport offers:

Can I visit the Canterbury campus?

The University are closely monitoring the evolving COVID-19 (Coronavirus) situation and following the latest guidance from Public Health England. We hope that as time moves on, we may be able to offer more campus tours in 2021. In the meantime, you can explore the Canterbury campus and accommodation using the virtual tour.

Where will I live in my first year?

First year students starting their studies in 2021 can apply for accommodation in Canterbury. On the Canterbury campus, we have a range of accommodation options to suit you. Whether you want to cook for yourself or have meals included, live in a flat with an en-suite bathroom or a house with shared facilities. Even with a self-catered option, you can still add on a catering package.

How do I arrange accommodation for my second/third year?

For your second and third years, most students choose to live off-campus in private accommodation with friends they have made. That said, a few students do continue to live in university provided accommodation – you can speak to the Accommodation team directly about this by emailing accomm@kent.ac.uk. You can find out more about accommodation on both campuses and view a virtual tour on the main Accommodation webpages.

I can’t move to Canterbury in my second year – how can I attend lectures?

The University of Kent operates a free coach service between Medway and Canterbury campuses, in partnership with The Kings Ferry. This service operates 7 days a week term time only and the journey takes approximately 50 minutes. You can find out more about our shuttle bus on their website.

You can also find out more details on how to get to the Canterbury campus by train, road and rail here.
