A Year In Industry: Owen Griffiths

An interview with Owen Griffiths discussing his YII at Ipswich School

Q: Why did you decide to take a placement year?
A:I decided to do a placement year as I believe it is a great way to gain valuable experience in the field of work. As a result, I opted for the year in industry course when I joined the university and the more I learnt about a placement year and the opportunities and experience I could gain the better this decision became.
Q: Where did you do your placement year & and what did you do there?
A: My placement year is at Ipswich School, a leading independent school in Suffolk, and I am an Athletic Development intern. The role involves creating and delivering S&C programmes for age group sports teams, delivering 1-1 gym sessions with sports scholars and analysis of sports games using GPS tracking and video analysis. I also help the coaching of Rugby and Cricket games sessions, even taking my own age group cricket team in the summer.
Q: Did you receive any support during your placement?
A:I have constant support while away on my placement year with frequent conversations with my placement advisor. With meetings scheduled to talk over what I am getting up to while on my placement but also helping me through the university coursework I am completing while away on my placement year
Q: How do you think your placement year will help you in the future?
A: My placement year will help me in the future as it gives me a stepping stone into the world of work. The experience and training I have gained this year has put me on a good path to getting a better role straight of an undergraduate degree, compared to those who have not completed a placement year.
