Q: Why did you decide to take a placement year?
A: To enhance my career prospects by providing me with industry experience and skills. A lot of jobs in sports analysis are wanting evidence of experience, not just a degree level qualification. I thought the placement would also help me to build a network of people working in sports analysis that I can potentially draw upon when looking for a job after my degree. Finally, I felt that the placement would allow me to develop professionally by helping me to develop my personal skills including communication & presenting, time management, and organisation.
Q: Where did you do your placement year & and what did you do there?
A: I am currently completing my placement year at Arsenal Football Club working as a Scouting Analyst Intern. My role involves identifying, tracking and monitoring emerging talent across the under 10 to under 18 age categories through the application of data analysis, video analysis and statistical profiling of players. I create written and video reports on targeted players to support the decision-making process for player recruitment.
Q: Did you receive any support during your placement?
A: Yes, I receive support from the Analysts at Arsenal as well as from my lecturers at the University.
Q: How do you think your placement year will help you in the future?
A: I hope my placement year will enable me to become a well-developed professional ready to being work in the sports analytics industry. I will also already have an established network of professionals and greater career perspectives. I feel much more confident having the right skills and experience for a job sports analysis having completed the year in industry.
