Keeping your brain active in isolation

Our team at the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences have come up with some great suggestions for some sports series and books to keep you occupied and educated while in isolation.

Dr John Dickinson, Reader

John recommends watching the documentary Andy Murray: Resurfacing on Amazon Prime. The film follows the Wimbledon winner’s experience of injury from 2017 to 2019.

John also recommends watching The English Game on Netflix, a historical drama about the beginnings of English football.

Dr James Hopker, Head of School

“If you are interested in getting an insight into what it is like to be involved in the world of elite sport I recommend you watching “The Least Expected Day” on Netflix which follows the Spanish Movistar Professional cycling team during the 2019 professional cycling season. Alternatively if you are interested in sports nutrition in elite sport, “Eat, Race, Win” on Amazon Prime follows the work of a performance nutritionalist working with a professional cycling team during the Tour de France. Both documentaries support the physiology, training and nutrition modules on the sport and exercise science degree, and will be of interest to anyone who is keen on pursuing a career in elite sport.”

A good book to read is Bounce by Matthew Syed and James also recommends listening to the Science of Sport podcast

Dr Chris Fullerton, Lecturer

Chris recommends reading Endure: Mind, Body and the Curiously Elastic Limits of Human Performance by Alex Hutchinson.

Callum A. O’Malley, PhD student, Graduate Teaching Assistant

Callum recommends the following books to read:
Work Physiology Physiological Bases of Exercise Åstrand et al. (any edition is a good edition)
Endurance Performance in Sport: Psychological Theory and Interventions – by Carla Meijen
