{"id":893,"date":"2016-05-08T21:24:39","date_gmt":"2016-05-08T20:24:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/unikentcomp-news\/?p=893"},"modified":"2016-05-08T21:27:26","modified_gmt":"2016-05-08T20:27:26","slug":"professor-david-chadwick-marks-accident-recovery-with-a-charity-abseil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/unikentcomp-news\/2016\/05\/08\/professor-david-chadwick-marks-accident-recovery-with-a-charity-abseil\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor David Chadwick marks accident recovery with a charity abseil"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>David Chadwick, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cs.kent.ac.uk\/people\/staff\/dwc8\/\">Professor of Information Systems Security<\/a> in the School of Computing is raising money for King\u2019s College Hospital after their\u00a0excellent\u00a0care for him following\u00a0a severe\u00a0cycling accident.<\/p>\n<p>David was cycling down St Thomas\u2019 Hill, Canterbury in January when he was knocked off his bike by another cyclist, resulting in extensive injuries. He is currently on a phased return to work after\u00a0two operations and a period of\u00a0recuperation.<\/p>\n<p>David said: \u2018I was nearly killed in a cycling accident on 19 Jan 2016 whilst cycling home from the University. I suffered a broken shoulder, seven broken ribs, a shattered pelvis and cracked vertebrae. I was rushed to Kings College Hospital in the early hours of the morning and had my first operation later that day. A week later I had a bigger operation on my pelvis. Thanks to the excellent care I received, I survived. Patients have 40% greater chance of survival at Kings, so I was lucky to be transferred there, otherwise I might not be fundraising for them today.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I have recently began to walk again and I am hoping to be fully recovered by June, and also fit enough to take part in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justgiving.com\/David-Chadwick-Abseil\">sponsored abseil<\/a> down the Jubilee tower block at the hospital. This is a great target to aim for, both physically and financially, since all the sponsorship money I raise will go towards the fantastic care that Kings gives to its patients.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>David is hoping to raise \u00a31000 for the hospital.
