{"id":750,"date":"2015-11-06T11:55:51","date_gmt":"2015-11-06T11:55:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/unikentcomp-news\/?p=750"},"modified":"2018-05-14T11:03:26","modified_gmt":"2018-05-14T10:03:26","slug":"women-in-computing-event-hosted-by-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/unikentcomp-news\/2015\/11\/06\/women-in-computing-event-hosted-by-school\/","title":{"rendered":"Women in Computing event hosted by School"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Thursday 5 November, the School hosted a Women in Computing event to inspire students\u00a0by hearing from female\u00a0speakers who are\u00a0successful in their respective industries, \u00a0despite\u00a0women being\u00a0significantly under-represented in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) industries.<\/p>\n<p>Katie Difford, a second year Computing student organised the event.\u00a0She said, &#8216;Overall, we learned that irrespective of how we come to work and study in IT, technology will be used in any career path we take and that women are significantly under-represented in these industries. However, we also discussed that women have made huge progress in both work and academia and it is hoped that in 20 years time, women and men will be equal in STEM industries and a &#8216;Women in Computing&#8217; talk would no longer be necessary.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Speakers included\u00a0Anna Jordanous, a lecturer at the School of Computing. Anna talked about her path into the tech industry, completing her undergraduate degree and working in an IT role\u00a0in retail, before applying for her Master&#8217;s and \u00a0PhD. Katie said; &#8216;It was \u00a0interesting to hear as Anna\u00a0demonstrated the different paths into IT roles in industry as well as academia.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>PhD student, Ayah Helal\u00a0talked about her decision to come to England from Egypt for her PhD and her hopes for\u00a0the future. Ayah recalled\u00a0that in her undergraduate class, women outnumbered men, but further on in their careers, women were impacted by their decisions to get married and have children, as the cultural expectations of them were different.<\/p>\n<p>Sara Beaney, from\u00a0Vanquis Bank told students about her work in management and \u00a0progression to working in IT through various promotions. She talked about how women are very well represented in the people she manages and shared stories about how these female colleagues\u00a0came to work IT.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, Catryn Ladd talked about how IT is becoming a more important aspect of her job in the charity sector.
