{"id":650,"date":"2015-05-11T12:23:28","date_gmt":"2015-05-11T11:23:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/unikentcomp-news\/?p=650"},"modified":"2015-05-11T12:46:09","modified_gmt":"2015-05-11T11:46:09","slug":"kent-launches-free-online-course-in-erlang","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/unikentcomp-news\/2015\/05\/11\/kent-launches-free-online-course-in-erlang\/","title":{"rendered":"Kent launches free online course in Erlang"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today Kent launched the pilot K-MOOC (Kent massive open online course) in\u00a0Functional Programming in Erlang (a programming language) with over 500\u00a0participants.<\/p>\n<p>The K-MOOC is a joint project led by Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.kent.ac.uk\/people\/staff\/sjt\/\" target=\"_blank\">Simon Thompson<\/a> from the\u00a0School of Computing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/uelt\/staff\/cdt\/profiles\/maoconnor.html\" target=\"_blank\">Mark O&#8217;Connor<\/a>,\u00a0a Distance Learning Technologist for the University, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/adams601\" target=\"_blank\">Stephen Adams<\/a>, who is the Teaching Assistant for\u00a0the course and a PhD student in computer science.<\/p>\n<p>This <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/elearning\/themes\/kmoocs.html\" target=\"_blank\">K-MOOCs project<\/a>\u00a0is being supported by the University of Kent as part of its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/beacon\/\" target=\"_blank\">Beacon\u00a0Projects<\/a> initiative, which is in\u00a0celebration of the University&#8217;s 50th anniversary. The Erlang K-MOOC aims\u00a0to explore the feasibility of the University of Kent offering MOOCs, with\u00a0the ultimate aim to showcase and promote expertise, scholarship and\u00a0research at Kent for a global audience.<\/p>\n<p>All staff and students are invited to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/calendar\/?eid=DFAE0B96-0560-48B1-BDA7-27A21929A115&amp;view_by=day&amp;date=20150511&amp;category=&amp;tag=\">Beacon Tea Party<\/a> on Monday 11\u00a0May at 3.30pm in the Colyer-Fergusson building to celebrate the launch of\u00a0this and other Beacon Projects and to find out more.<\/p>\n<p>Simon said: &#8216;We recorded some master classes in a studio with green screen\u00a0and these are in the final stages of production, but the majority of the\u00a0K-MOOC lectures are more &#8220;home made&#8221; and were recorded on my MacBook Pro, using the built in audio\u00a0and video facilities, and Kent&#8217;s lecture recording facilities that are\u00a0powered by <a href=\"http:\/\/panopto.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Panopt<\/a>o.
